You joking? Tom’s going to kill him and hide his very existence. If his bosses ever found out about Ethan, he would be fired without a second thought.
But there would be no reason to fire Tom, if Tom and/or the company equipment had caused this, then yes he would be fired. However, Ethan did this to himself with his own equipment. It’s more likely that Tom is impressed or knows there is an issue for Ethan (possibly both all things considered.
Tom’s a terrible person, but I can’t follow your chain of logic, here. I don’t think Ethan and Tom have ever even met before…
Tom seems surprised the University has transformation equipment available. Given enough time there will be “New You” transformation stations available like the ones in the game Fire Fall.
Tom: And you did this with equipment at the University?
Ethan: Yes. . . during my coffee break. It’s not that hard, I don’t see why you have so much trouble with it.
Huh, that’s a really good point, actually. Helix editing seems like a really big deal when seen from HRC’s perspective, but Ethan just breezes through it. Maybe he’s a prodigy?
That, or the people currently working for/running the company are terrible at their jobs.

I’m with Lone Wolf. This page is titled “Schooling” and Tom has just been ‘schooled.’
It might also be that the HRC corporation wants to keep a monopoly on such things, and thus wants to buy out or otherwise suppress potential competitors. If Ethan made it public knowledge that a grad student could do such stuff, it would cut into their ability to charge exorbitant rates for their services.
Once something is discovered it becomes easier to do. Could be some sort of subconscious mental link people have with other people.
