Bay Smith is a main character. Once a guy, she was turned into a girl several years ago. She keeps this fact a secret, and only a handful of people know.
She's now a struggling actress whose roommate is actually her daughter from an alternate future timeline.
Sometimes I hate to be right! this was my biggest worry in regards new Brad, and just when I was starting to like him! Even so, this is far from the worst scenario and I am still hopeful for the happy reunion!
Wait a minute… that doesn’t look like the Mary Smith we saw When Bay went to Canada. https://sailorsun.org/?comic=sailorsun-org-12 This one looks a fair bit older, and Bay clearly doesn’t recognize her.
I’d blame shifting art style except for Bay’s reaction. I am very confused.
My guess is that “Claire” was what Mary had intended to name her daughter–she doesn’t realize that Heather is her daughter (especially since Heather got her hair dyed), and mistook Bay for the missing twin.
@ijuinkun: “Claire” is probably (now) the name Mary gave her daughter–and technically it probably still is Heather’s legal name in Canada since she was born in Canada (presumably). But I suspect that CD made her “Claire” as a shout-out to El Goonish Shive, which is where he borrowed the design of the TG gun from–not just the idea, but what it looks like. Also characters from El Goonish Shive have made cameos in both of CD’s series.
Claire is a really obscure name in EGS, though. I’d be surprised if it’s an intentional reference. It’s not like Claire is all that uncommon of a female name.
Well, since my post with a link on this subject doesn’t seem to be coming up for awhile, let me restate my guess that “Claire” is a shout-out to El Goonish Shive; Grace uses “Claire” as an alternate ID early in the series.
I’m guessing that Heather called Mary but has never met her in person. Somehow Heather convinced Mary that she was Mary’s daughter stolen away so long ago and sent her a picture from when she looked just like Bay–no hair coloring–and had Bay’s hairdo, and finally invited her to her daughter’s wedding. Heather just didn’t mention which daughter was the bride.

Mary’s look is definitely shifting art style. Note that she’s got that same grey shock of hair in both this page and the linked one.
Bay’s reaction, though, is plot-related.
2 questions. who is Claire, and what does she have to do with this story?

Bay Maaaaannnn! Nana nana nana nana BAY MAAAAAN!
(I’m so sorry.)
Isn’t it obvious who “Claire” is?
And Bay doesn’t recognize her mom because she had all those memories excised into Brad.
Or at least, that’s my guess.

This is going to take a whole lot of explaining.
“Yes. Now gimme the allowance we missed.”

Note that “Claire” in El Goonish Shive was a shout-out to Clark (Superman).
Oh, this is going to be sad, isn’t it? And with that look on Mom’s face, it’s going to be hard to tell her the truth.
Dang how much did she give to Brad? Does she only have her memories from when she became Bay?

next stop THE TWILIGHT ZONE
I… I have to say Bay shouldn’t have just given those memories away, even if she was making a fresh start in life.
