You gotta ask yourself–which is more important, your jock cred, or winning the favor of the girl you like? And if the motivation behind seeking jock cred involves “because the girls like it”, then you probably need to think again.
This whole jocks/nerds thing is a relic of the past that I don’t think people pay much attention to nowadays. I don’t think that any jock’s reputation would be hurt by them doing something educational. A jock is just someone who plays sports, and their ability to play well is not compromised by being educated.
I don’t think his jock cred would be an issue at all. All he’d have to do is point out to his fellow jocks that he was doing it for his girlfriend. It might even give him more cred since he has a good looking girl.

Sadly, a lot of jocks are not nearly as rational as you. And the ones who are are likely to be afraid of being shunned by the one who aren’t.
I think that the jock training table is serving far too many green vegetables. Or else there’s algae in the locker room shower…
